Akkermansia Muciniphila in Sodatide: What the Label and the Study Say

Quick answer

Akkermansia muciniphila is one of three bacteria in Sodatide's 36 mg probiotic blend. The label gives no live count, so the amount per capsule is not published. The best-known human study gave 10 billion cells a day for 3 months to 32 adults; insulin sensitivity improved with the pasteurized form, but weight change was not significant (Depommier 2019 (Akkermansia pilot)).

The basics

What is Akkermansia muciniphila?

Akkermansia muciniphila is a bacterium that lives in the mucus layer lining your gut. Its name means "mucus lover", because it feeds on that lining.

People with more weight and poorer blood-sugar numbers often carry less of it. That link is an observation, not proof of cause, but it sparked studies and later a wave of supplement ads.

In Sodatide, Akkermansia is the last name listed in the probiotic blend. The other two are Bifidobacterium infantis and Clostridium butyricum. The profile below puts the label facts next to the research.

Dose check

How much Akkermansia is in one Sodatide capsule?

The label does not say. Akkermansia shares a single 36 mg probiotic blend with two other strains, and no amount is printed for any of them. U.S. rules allow this: a proprietary blend only has to show its total weight (21 CFR 101.36 (proprietary blends)).

Weight is the wrong unit for bacteria anyway: the NIH notes it has no relationship with the number of living microbes (NIH ODS, Probiotics (health professional)). Studies count cells or CFU (colony-forming units).

The study

What did the Akkermansia human study find?

The main human trial was small and careful. It enrolled 32 adults with overweight or obesity and insulin resistance. For 3 months they took 10 billion live cells, 10 billion pasteurized cells, or a placebo each day (Depommier 2019 (Akkermansia pilot)).

The authors called it a proof-of-concept study: a test of whether an idea deserves a bigger trial.

Total cholesterolDown 8.68%Yes

Note that the form that did best was pasteurized, meaning heat-treated so the cells no longer grow.

Form matters

Is the Akkermansia in Sodatide live or pasteurized?

The label does not say. It names the species and stops there: alive, heat-treated or a mix is not stated.

That gap matters more for Akkermansia than for most probiotics. In the pilot, the pasteurized form gave the clearer results (Depommier 2019 (Akkermansia pilot)). In the UK, the safety review was written about a pasteurized product, at up to 50 billion cells a day for healthy adults (UK ACNFP 2024 (pasteurised Akkermansia)).

The fridge clue is not an answer

The label says "Refrigerate for optimal quality", and the sales page says to refrigerate after opening to protect the probiotics. Cold storage hints at live cells, but it is not a statement of form. Ask the seller to confirm it in writing.

Numbers side by side

How do Akkermansia study doses compare with other probiotic doses?

Prebiotic fiber per day, grams

Sodatide, inulin + starch0.311 g
Resistant starch, lowest tested3.5 g
Inulin, typical low dose5 g
Inulin, 8-week trial10 g

(Bush 2023 (resistant potato starch))

Probiotic doses in studies, billions a day

B. infantis IBS trial0.1 billion
Common product, low end1 billion
Akkermansia pilot10 billion

(Depommier 2019 (Akkermansia pilot))

Fiber doses come from the linked trials (Jackson 1999 (inulin 10 g/day)) (Bush 2023 (resistant potato starch)); probiotic doses from (Whorwell 2006 (B. infantis 35624, IBS)) (NIH ODS, Probiotics (health professional)) (Depommier 2019 (Akkermansia pilot)) (UK ACNFP 2024 (pasteurised Akkermansia)). Sodatide prints no CFU count, so it cannot be placed on the second chart. Its 36 mg blend is a weight, and weight says nothing about live count.

Sodatide cannot sit on the probiotic chart, because it prints no count.

The hype

Does Akkermansia help with weight loss?

Not in any reliable way shown so far. The pilot saw a small weight drop that could have been chance (Depommier 2019 (Akkermansia pilot)). Across probiotics in general, the latest review of 19 trials found no effect on body weight or BMI (NIH ODS, Weight loss supplements).

Sodatide is not a GLP-1 medicine, and its label does not say it is. Its front panel claims metabolic and digestive support, appetite control and satiety, and energy from fats. Those are claims, not test results.

Picture a 44-year-old who wants appetite help without a needle. Her best evidence-backed step is not a capsule. In the Diabetes Prevention Program, people who lost about 7% of their weight and moved 150 minutes a week cut their type 2 diabetes risk by 58% (NIDDK Diabetes Prevention Program).

Safety

Is Akkermansia safe to take?

In the pilot, both forms were safe and well tolerated over 3 months (Depommier 2019 (Akkermansia pilot)), but 32 people is too few to catch rare problems. The UK paper proposed use in healthy adults only and left out pregnant and nursing women (UK ACNFP 2024 (pasteurised Akkermansia)).

Check with your doctor first if this is you

Live bacteria carry a rare risk of serious infection in people who are very ill, have a weak immune system (chemotherapy, transplant drugs, high-dose steroids) or have a central line (NIH ODS, Probiotics (health professional)) (NCCIH, Probiotics). The same goes if you are pregnant or nursing, or have diabetes and take medicine for it. Keep taking prescribed medicine as directed.

Fever, chills or feeling very unwell while on any probiotic needs prompt care. Our Sodatide side effects page lists every warning sign in one place.

Where does Akkermansia fit in the Sodatide formula?

Akkermansia is the most talked-about name on the bottle and the least documented. The fibers have printed amounts; the bacteria do not. The full panel is typed out on the Sodatide Supplement Facts page.

FAQ

Akkermansia in Sodatide: questions people ask

How much Akkermansia muciniphila is in Sodatide?

The amount is not published. Akkermansia is one of three bacteria in a 36 mg probiotic blend, and the label prints no cell or CFU count for any of them. The weight of the blend cannot tell you how many live cells it holds, so ask the seller for a count.

Is the Akkermansia in Sodatide pasteurized?

The label does not say. It names the species only, with no strain code and no live or pasteurized status. That matters because the pilot trial found the pasteurized form gave clearer results. The refrigerate advice hints at live cells but is not a statement of form.

Does Akkermansia make you lose weight?

Not reliably, based on current research. In the 32-person pilot, weight fell about 2.27 kg with the pasteurized form, but the change was not statistically significant. A review of 19 probiotic trials found no effect on body weight or BMI. Food, activity and sleep remain the proven levers.

Is Akkermansia the same as a GLP-1 drug?

No. Akkermansia is a gut bacterium sold in supplements, while GLP-1 drugs are prescription medicines. Sodatide is a dietary supplement and not a GLP-1 medicine. Prescription options for weight are a talk to have with your doctor.

How much Akkermansia was used in studies?

The pilot trial used 10 billion cells a day for 3 months. A UK novel-food paper discussed a pasteurized product at up to 50 billion cells a day for healthy adults. Neither figure can be compared with Sodatide, because its label prints no count.

Can I take Akkermansia while pregnant?

Ask your doctor first. The Sodatide label says pregnant or nursing women should consult a physician before use, and the UK paper on pasteurized Akkermansia left pregnant and nursing women out of its proposed use. There is no safety data for Sodatide in pregnancy.
