Fiber and your gut

Inulin and Bloating: Why This Fiber Makes Some People Gassy

Quick answer

Inulin causes gas because your gut bacteria ferment it. In a tolerance study of 26 healthy adults, gas was the most common complaint, then bloating, yet up to 10 g a day of native inulin was well tolerated. One Sodatide capsule holds 211 mg, about 2% of that. People with IBS may still react to small amounts.

The short science

Why does inulin make you bloated?

Inulin bloats because it is food for your gut bacteria, not for you. Your body cannot digest it, so it reaches the colon whole.

There, bacteria ferment it. Fermentation makes gas as a by-product. A little gas is normal and quiet. A sudden jump in fiber can make more gas than your gut is used to, and that pressure is what you feel as bloating.

Inulin comes mostly from chicory root, and FDA counts it as dietary fiber (FDA, Dietary fiber Q&A). It belongs to a family of carbohydrates called fructans. Sodatide's capsule lists it first, as chicory root inulin, 211 mg. Our page on chicory root inulin covers what the fiber studies found beyond the gut.

Grams, not milligrams

How much inulin causes gas and bloating?

It usually takes grams. In a University of Minnesota study, 26 healthy adults tried different chicory inulin products. Gas was reported most, then bloating. Still, the authors found doses up to 10 g a day of native inulin were well tolerated (Bonnema 2010 (inulin tolerance)).

Inulin amounts in studies and in one Sodatide capsule, with what each source reported
Amount a dayWhere it comes fromWhat happened
211 mgOne Sodatide capsule (label)Not studied
Up to 5 gOligofructose, a shorter cousin of inulin (Bonnema 2010 (inulin tolerance))Well tolerated
Up to 10 gNative chicory inulin, 26 healthy adults (Bonnema 2010 (inulin tolerance))Well tolerated; gas, then bloating, most reported
10 g for 8 weeks54 adults with raised blood fats (Jackson 1999 (inulin 10 g/day))Lower insulin at week 4; triglycerides only trended down

Put simply, 211 mg is about 2% of 10 g. Most healthy adults are unlikely to notice that much inulin at all. That cuts both ways, though: an amount too small to bloat you is also far below what fiber trials used.

See the gap

Is 211 mg of inulin a lot?

Each bar shows the label amount as a share of the smallest dose tested in people.

Amount per capsule (label)Low end of the daily dose used in studies

Bars show each label amount as a share of the smallest daily dose we found tested in people. Fiber trials used grams; Sodatide holds milligrams, about 2% of 10 g of inulin and about 3% of 3.5 g of resistant starch. Probiotics are dosed by live count (CFU), not weight, and the label prints no count, so that bar stays empty.

Fiber powders, like the one in the photo above, are scooped by the gram. A capsule is measured in milligrams. If you want to compare a capsule with a plain fiber product, our Sodatide vs fiber supplements guide lines them up.

Sensitive guts

Is inulin bad for IBS?

It can be. Fructans like inulin may trigger gas, pain or bloating in some people with IBS, even at amounts other people never notice. There is no published study of Sodatide in IBS.

Picture a 37-year-old with IBS who bloats on fiber bars. For her, a small dose is not automatically a safe dose. A dietitian may help her test which fibers she tolerates before she adds any new product.

What about the B. infantis in the capsule?

One strain of B. infantis, called 35624, was tested in 362 women with IBS. Only the 100 million CFU daily dose beat placebo on pain and bloating; higher and lower doses did not (Whorwell 2006 (B. infantis 35624, IBS)). Sodatide names the species but no strain and no count, so that result does not carry over. More on B. infantis.

Practical steps

How can you add fiber without bloating?

Go slowly and change one thing at a time. That way you can tell what your gut is reacting to.

  1. Add one new fiber at a time

If you start a capsule and a new cereal in the same week, you will not know which one caused the gas.

  2. Increase slowly over weeks

Small steps give your gut bacteria time to adjust to more fiber.

  3. Drink water with it

The Sodatide label asks for an 8 oz glass of water with each capsule.

  4. Keep a one-week log

Note gas, bloating and stool changes. A simple log beats memory when you talk to your doctor.

Food still carries most of the fiber in a healthy diet. Beans, oats, vegetables and fruit add grams, not milligrams. Our gut health guide has more food-first ideas.

Red flags

When is bloating a reason to see a doctor?

Mild gas after new fiber is common. Some symptoms are not, and they need care rather than a supplement switch.

  • Severe or ongoing belly pain
  • Blood in your stool
  • Diarrhea that does not stop
  • Fever, chills or feeling very unwell while on a probiotic
  • Signs of an allergic reaction

Stop the product and get medical help if any of these appear. Full list on Sodatide side effects.

  1. Gastrointestinal Tolerance of Chicory Inulin Products. Bonnema AL, Kolberg LW, Thomas W, Slavin JL. Journal of the American Dietetic Association, 2010.26 healthy adults; flatulence was the most reported symptom, then bloating. "Doses up to 10 g/day of native inulin and up to 5 g/day of oligofructose were well-tolerated."
  2. The effect of the daily intake of inulin on fasting lipid, insulin and glucose concentrations in middle-aged men and women. Jackson KG, Taylor GRJ, Clohessy AM, Williams CM. British Journal of Nutrition, 1999.54 middle-aged adults with moderately raised lipids took 10 g/day inulin or placebo for 8 weeks; insulin was lower at week 4 (P<0.01) and triglycerides showed a trend down at week 8, returning to baseline by week 12.

FAQ

Inulin and bloating: common questions

Does inulin cause gas and bloating?

Yes, at gram doses. Gut bacteria ferment inulin and make gas. In a study of 26 healthy adults, gas was the most reported symptom and bloating came second, though up to 10 g a day was well tolerated.

Will Sodatide make me bloated?

Probably not much, though no one has studied it. One capsule holds 211 mg of inulin and 100 mg of resistant starch, far below the gram doses that cause gas. People with IBS or very sensitive guts may still notice changes in week one.

How long does inulin bloating last?

The sources we cite give no timeline, and Sodatide itself has never been studied. A one-week log of gas and bloating shows your own pattern. If bloating is severe or does not ease, stop and talk with your doctor.

Is inulin safe for people with IBS?

It may not be. Inulin is a fructan, and fructans may bother some people with IBS even at small amounts. Talk with your doctor or a dietitian before adding Sodatide or any inulin product, and change one thing at a time.

How much inulin is too much?

Healthy adults in one study tolerated up to 10 g a day of native inulin, with gas as the main complaint. There is no set upper limit for everyone. Sodatide's label says one capsule a day and do not exceed it.

Is chicory root inulin a good source of fiber?

FDA counts inulin as dietary fiber. The question is amount: 211 mg in one Sodatide capsule is a small share of daily fiber. Beans, oats, vegetables and fruit add grams per serving.
